Released in June 1966 this French E.P includes French language versions of two of Marianne’s English recordings alongside two French originals. ‘Coquillages’, is Marianne’s own French translation of ‘Cockleshells’, the traditional English folk song Michael John Taylor adapted for North Country Maid. The recording would also appear on her fourth UK long player Loveinamist. ‘Si Demain’ was originally released in the UK in May as ‘Tomorrow’s Calling’.

Hugues Aufray and Marianne on ‘Les Visiteurs D’un Soir’ March 1966

The first of the French compositions is ‘Le Cœur Gros’, written by Hughes Aufray and Pierre Delanoe. He recorded the song for a 1965 7″ and it featured on his first two live albums recorded at L’Olympia in Paris. Marianne admired Aufray’s work and in 1966 they shared the bill at the famous French concert hall, and she would also perform on his TV show Les Visiteurs D’un Soir. Marianne’s recording of his composition ‘He’ll Come Back To Me’ appeared on her eponymous debut, and she would later record the track in the original French as ‘A Bientôt Nous Deux’. Sadly ‘Le Cœur Gros’ has never been re-issued on CD or streaming.

Popularised in English as ‘I Will Wait For You’, ‘Ne Me Quitte Pas’ is from the 1964 French musical Les Parapluies De Cherbourg directed by Jacques Demy. Michel Legrand’s memorable score helped turn the film into an international hit and Marianne wanted to record the love theme. “I’ve always been such a Francophile. I totally fell in love with Les Parapluies De Cherbourg; I’d never seen anything like it before – a New Wave light opera! It was a beautiful homage to all those old Hollywood musicals but also rather bittersweet and so very very French.” The recording would also appear on Faithfull Forever, her third US album released in August 1966 and on Loveinamist released in March 1967.
