A departure from Broken English, its gutsier predecessor, 1981’s Dangerous Acquaintances captued a more subtle emotional perspective. While still exploring the melancholy world she was swiftly making her own, Marianne didn’t want to be musically typecast as “some sort of tragedy queen of rock’n’roll”, saddled with a ‘victim’ image, and the album has considerably less bite.  Fully embracing her talent as a lyricist on 8 of the album’s 9 tracks, the record also also marked the development of a genuine musical partnership with guitarist and co-songwriter Barry Reynolds, notable on the desolate horror of standout track ‘Truth, Bitter Truth’ which was remixed for a German seven-inch. Other singles taken from the album were ‘Sweetheart’ and ‘Intrigue’ with the Netherlands also releasing ‘Tenderness’.
